From February 2nd to 4th, I had the opportunity to take part in an EYP session funded by the EU. During this event, I engaged in debates with a community of bright-minded individuals about the issues facing the EU. On the final day, we had a General Assembly (GA) where I delivered a speech on the topic of light pollution. Here is a part of my speech.
Dear President and board members esteemed chairs, fellow delegates. I’m thrilled to be here and for the chance to have the opening speech of my committee.
As we all gathered here to discuss problems occurring in the EU countries, it is urgent to mention the problem of light pollution, which is nowadays becoming a more and more widespread and relevant issue, in many developed countries.
Because of inaccurate usage of energy and light, The unwanted artificial light brightens the night sky, and even though the problem can seem trivial, it can lead to disruptive aftermaths.
According to the National Geographic educational team, more than 80 percent of the world’s population, and 99 percent of Americans and Europeans, live under sky glow.
Those conditions can become a reason for Imbalance in ecosystems, lead to health-related problems, and harm the policy of many countries in the EU. (Then I’m taking the monkey from my bag)
This is a monkey, and Because of light pollution and changes in the circadian clock(which animals use to orientate in time), he can’t sleep well at night.
The monkey also has a telescope, which he used to look at the stars, but because of light pollution, he can’t do that as well.
The matter is that light pollution and its problems go beyond ones life, affecting ecological, educational, social, and many other fields and areas.
Finishing Id like to mention that in the given resolution, the ENVI committee tried to focus on those issues and give sustainable solutions for bright and prospering future. thank you for your attention.
